by Cassie Biddleton

Hemorrhoids hurt! But the not so bad news is that they are treatable and relief is available. Read on to find out how to cure your hemorrhoids.

Preventing hemorrhoid flare ups is as important as treating them when they do occur. Check the list below and make sure you're not doing any of the following:

  • Consuming foods that make hemorrhoids worse, like caffeine, any sort of alcohol, nuts or spicy items

  • Wiping or rubbing too hard after eliminating

  • Pushing or straining when trying to "go"

  • Staying seated or standing without moving for extended amounts of time. Instead, move around as you're able.

If you're doing any of these things, stop now! You're making your hemorrhoid symptoms worse! Instead, try these dietary changes:

  • Avoid any food, including those listed above, that seems to make your hemorrhoids worse

  • Eat more fiber. Fiber will make it easier to "go" and you won't need to push or strain.

  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. This, like fiber, will make it easier to use the toilet.

In case your piles get more painful, do everything you can to help lessen them. If they're not getting better, they're getting worse. Be proactive.

You'll find over the counter medicines available from the drugstore a common first stop when people are trying to treat their hemorrhoids. these include Tucks medicated pads and Preparation H suppositories. However, they are only recommended for a few days use, not for extended amounts of time.

Look and see if you have hydrocortisone creams around. Their anti inflammatory properties will help reduce swelling to the skin of your hemorrhoids.

Pain relief can come in the form of a cream with zinc oxide, with is very soothing and contained in baby diaper rash creams.

Pain relieve sprays that numb the skin are available at drugstores too.

You'll also want to make sure your patting down the area rather then wiping or rubbing after going to the bathroom. Baby wipes can be a great solution here, as they are gentle on your skin.

Taking some time in bed rest is an option to relive pressure from the muscles if your hemorrhoids are extremely painful. Applying ice and then a warm, moist towel periodically through the day, or sitz baths, can also be used.

Always wear cotton underwear to wick away moisture. Don't use any products with coloring dyes or perfumes that will make the tissue inflame further.

These simple steps will help your hemroids, but always ask a doctor before starting any new medical treatments.
